Project Hello World
A few months ago, we supported Screen Share, a brilliant charity helping refugees in the UK gain digital access and skills, ensuring that people building their lives here aren’t left behind in our increasingly online world. This month, we’re building on that same theme of digital inclusivity, but looking further afield. While Screen Share helps people navigate digital life once they arrive in the UK, Project Hello World works at the other end of the spectrum, bringing internet access, power, and education to communities around the world that have never been connected at all.
Project Hello World is a UK-based charity tackling digital inequality by building solar-powered, internet-enabled “Hello Hubs” in marginalised and remote communities. These hubs are community-built and community-owned, giving people free access to the internet, educational tools, and a sustainable source of electricity.
Each Hello Hub serves as a digital gateway - equipped with Wi-Fi, screens, and solar charging - where children can learn online, adults can access vital information and services, and communities can connect globally. To date, over 100 hubs have been built across Uganda, Nepal, and Nigeria, providing connectivity for more than 120,000 people.
What makes Project Hello World especially powerful is its community-led model. Instead of dropping in external technology, the charity works directly with local residents who help build, maintain, and manage each hub. This creates ownership, ensures long-term sustainability, and empowers communities to use technology on their own terms.
Their impact goes far beyond just providing internet access, it’s about opportunity and empowerment (teach a man to fish, etc). From children learning languages and coding, to small businesses growing online, and communities using digital tools to advocate for local change, each Hello Hub becomes a small centre of possibility and connection.
It’s a project that combines innovation with humanity: practical technology meeting real human need. Supporting Project Hello World means helping bridge the digital divide, empowering communities, and giving more people the chance to learn, connect, and thrive, no matter where they live.
