New Incentives
What do New Incentives do?
New Incentives uses a simple but incredibly effective tool to save lives: small cash transfers. They provide conditional cash incentives to caregivers who bring their infants to government clinics for routine vaccinations.
By covering the hidden costs of healthcare - such as transport, lost wages for the day, or even a meal while waiting - they ensure that children in North West Nigeria receive protection against deadly diseases like measles, polio, and tuberculosis.
Why did we choose them?
We chose New Incentives because they are a gold standard in evidence-based giving, one of the core principles of Tithe. They don’t just hope their work is helping; they’ve proven it through a rigorous Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT).
In many of the areas where they operate, vaccination rates are among the lowest in the world. Their model is designed to be one of the most cost-effective ways to save a life, focusing on high-impact interventions where every dollar spent has a direct, measurable result on child survival.
What’s their impact?
The numbers behind New Incentives are some of the most compelling we’ve seen:
An independent study found that their program led to a 108% increase in the number of children who were fully vaccinated.
By increasing immunisation rates, they help prevent a portion of the 40% of childhood deaths in Nigeria that are caused by vaccine-preventable diseases.
To date, they have served over 6 million infants and disbursed over 26 million cash transfers, maintaining a staggering 85% retention rate through the entire vaccination cycle.
Beyond the cash, they work to improve the vaccine supply chain, ensuring that when a mother travels to a clinic, the vaccines are actually there and ready to be used.
Where did the money go?
Our donation of £450 goes directly toward these life-saving nudges. In this program, a very small amount of money goes a long way. For example, a series of transfers totalling just a few pounds is often enough to ensure a child completes their entire first-year vaccination schedule. This money helps a family bridge the gap between "wanting" to vaccinate their child and "being able" to afford the journey to the clinic.
