Against Malaria Foundation

What do Against Malaria Foundation do?

Against Malaria Foundation uses one of the simplest and most proven tools in global health: insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

They fund the purchase of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets for people at high risk of malaria, mostly in low and middle income countries. These nets are hung over beds or sleeping spaces to protect people from being bitten by malaria-carrying mosquitoes at night.

This is especially urgent during and around rainy seasons, when standing water creates more breeding sites for mosquitoes and malaria transmission can rise sharply. That makes July a great moment to support prevention, before more families are exposed.

Why did we choose them?

Against Malaria Foundation are one of GiveWell’s top-rated charities, meaning they have been independently assessed as one of the most cost-effective ways to save and improve lives.

This also marks a small milestone for Tithe - with this donation, we’ve now supported all four of GiveWell’s current top charities: Malaria Consortium, Helen Keller Intl, New Incentives, and Against Malaria Foundation. These are charities with an unusually high impact per pound donated and a huge amount of evidence-backed effectiveness.

AMF’s work is particularly compelling because malaria is both deadly and preventable. GiveWell estimates that malaria kills around 600,000 people each year, mostly children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. Bed nets are not complicated or flashy, but they are cheap, rigorously studied, and highly effective. GiveWell says AMF’s programme has exceptionally strong evidence of impact and estimates that nets cost around $6 each to provide.

What’s their impact?

As above, GiveWell estimates that each net costs $6, with a cost around $5,500 per life saved, based on its 2022 to 2024 analysis.

GiveWell also says that insecticide-treated nets have exceptionally strong evidence behind them, with many high-quality studies finding that they reduce malaria and save lives.

AMF works with national malaria programmes and partner organisations to fund mass net distribution campaigns. Their role includes identifying funding gaps, procuring nets, and monitoring distributions so there is a clearer picture of where donations have gone and whether nets are reaching households.
